One Day workshop with Arohanui Ropata
Please note that this workshop is
not available at the moment.
This is an introduction to traditional Harakeke
(flax) Raranga (weaving) where you will look at the care of flax
plants and learn how to make flowers and a simple basket that
you will take home with you.
During the day you
will acknowledge and
learn in a cultural way:
Tikanga (native customs)
Kaitiakitanga (protection and guardianship)
Two and three day workshops are also available
on request where you will move on to more advanced weaving and
learn how make a kete, basket or backpack.
About the tutor
Arohanui Ropata Waitaha Kati-Mamoe-Kaitahu,
is a south island Maori, descendant of Rakaihautu (also proud
to be Rarotongan, Tahitian, Irish, German and Jewish). She is
passionate about weaving and the care of land and harakeke resources.
Taught traditionally by her Mum, Arohanui has spent the last 10
years designing and making mats and wall-hangings for Marae (Maori
meeting places) and private individuals. She also teaches for
the local Arts Council.
