One day workshop with Simon Rutherford

Be introduced to traditional Maori weaving and learn all about harakeke or NZ flax. This one-day experience will involve preparing the harakeke and making a taka (a large square mat) and one or two kete iti (small baskets) to take away with you. Whilst you are working Simon will talk about harakeke raranga (weaving) and its various uses, as well as the history of the plant, its practical importance, traditions and protocol. This day will give you a real insight into this wonderful craft.

About the tutor
Simon is a Pakeha weaver who learnt traditional Maori techniques with noted Ngai Tahu weaver Cath Brown. He has recently completed a community project with Christchurch City Libraries where over 200 new weavers took part. He has hosted a regular informal weaving group for several years during which time he has taught dozens of people to weave, including visitors from other cultures. He loves introducing people to his material.
