One day workshop with Maureen
Harte.
A hands-on, creative experience where you will
weave your own small kete (basket) and flowers to take home with
you.
The leaves of the Harakeke (NZ Flax) plant have
been used as a traditional weaving material by Maori, the indigenous
people of New Zealand since ancient times.
You will learn how to harvest and prepare the
harakeke, as well as creating your own weaving.
We will also informally discuss some Maori
tikanga (customs) related to weaving.
About the tutor
Maureen's weaving journey began seven years ago, when she had
the opportunity to attend informal classes at Waiariki
Polytechnic and Maori Arts and Crafts Institute in Rotorua,
learning from an experienced and respected Maori weaver. She
fell in love with harakeke weaving – and has never been the same
since ! She now supplies her weaving to approximately 20
galleries and shops around New Zealand, as well as one overseas
gallery. She has been running weaving workshops at several
local high schools through the Adult Community Education
programme for three years. And is involved with 'Te Awhi Rito'
– a group of weavers in her local community who meet together
from time to time to create co-operative weaving projects.
Maureen was born in New Zealand and has lived here all her
life. She is of non-Maori ancestry.
